How to Move Your ChatGPT Memory to Claude (Step-by-Step Guide)

Why People Are Switching to Claude

Two key reasons are driving professionals to migrate from ChatGPT to Claude right now:

    • Anthropic refused Pentagon requests to allow Claude to be used for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons systems. This ethical stance has earned significant trust.

    • Claude has been releasing strong feature updates including memory, connectors, artifacts, and file creation which are now available on the free plan.

✅ VERIFIED FACT Anthropic explicitly declined Department of Defense requests, stating it did not want Claude used for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons. Claude subsequently hit #1 in the US App Store free charts (March 2026).

Important Update: Memory Is Now FREE

⚠️  CORRECTION TO CIRCULATING SOCIAL MEDIA ADVICE Many posts (and videos) claim Claude memory requires a paid Pro plan at $20/month. This was true before March 2, 2026. As of March 2, 2026, Claude memory is available to ALL users including the free plan. Free users do NOT need to paste context into each chat manually anymore.

Here is what is available on each plan:

Feature Free Plan Pro Plan ($20/mo)
Memory (long-term) ✅ Yes (as of Mar 2026) ✅ Yes
Memory import tool ✅ Yes ✅ Yes
Claude Artifacts ✅ Yes ✅ Yes
Connectors (Gmail etc.) ✅ Yes ✅ Yes

Step-by-Step: How to Transfer Your Memory to Claude

This is Anthropic’s official process. No third-party prompts required.

1– Go to the Claude Memory Import Page

Open your browser and go to:

claude.ai/

Go to settings—-Capabilities—–Memory……click on Start Import

You will see a page with a large button. Click:

“Start importing to Claude”

2–Copy Anthropic’s Official Export Prompt

On the import page, click the ‘Copy prompt’ button. This copies Anthropic’s official memory export prompt. You will paste this into ChatGPT (or Gemini, Copilot, whichever you are leaving).

Here is the exact prompt Anthropic provides (for your reference):

I’m moving to another service and need to export my data. List every memory you have stored about me, as well as any context you’ve learned about me from past conversations. Output everything in a single code block so I can easily copy it. Format each entry as: [date saved, if available] – memory content.  Make sure to cover all of the following. Preserve my words verbatim where possible: – Instructions I’ve given you about how to respond (tone, format, style) – Personal details: name, location, job, family, interests – Projects, goals, and recurring topics – Tools, languages, and frameworks I use – Preferences and corrections I’ve made to your behavior – Any other stored context not covered above  Do not summarize, group, or omit any entries. After the code block, confirm whether that is the complete set or if any remain.

💡 TRAINER TIP This prompt covers everything: tone preferences, personal details, projects, tools, and behavioral corrections. You do not need a separate ‘deeper’ prompt. This is comprehensive by design.

3–Paste the Prompt into ChatGPT

Go to chat.openai.com and open any conversation (or start a new one). Paste the prompt and send it. ChatGPT will output a code block containing everything it knows about you.

⚡ ALTERNATIVE: Export Directly from ChatGPT Settings In ChatGPT: Go to Settings → Personalization → Manage Memories. You can copy entries directly from there and skip the prompt step.

4–Edit Before You Import (Do Not Skip This)

Before pasting into Claude, clean up the output. Open Word or Google Docs and paste the ChatGPT response. Remove:

    • One-off tasks that are now complete

    • Old projects that are no longer relevant

    • Conversations that were specific to a single event

    • Anything personal you do not want an AI to remember going forward

Keep:

    • Your preferred communication style and tone

    • Your job role, industry, and business context

    • Ongoing projects and recurring goals

    • Format preferences (bullet points, short answers, etc.)

⚠️  NOTE ON MEMORY SCOPE Claude’s memory is designed to focus on work-related and professional context. Personal details unrelated to work may not be retained after import. If you need specific personal context stored, go to Settings → Capabilities → View and edit your memory and add it manually.

5–Paste Your Cleaned Memory into Claude

Return to the Claude memory import page .Paste your cleaned text into the input box and click ‘Add to memory’.

After submitting:

    • Claude processes and stores your memory as individual edits

    • Allow up to 24 hours for full processing

    • Click ‘See what Claude learned about you’ to verify. It opens a new chat with the prompt: “I updated my memory. What did you learn about me?”

    • Click ‘Manage edits’ to review, adjust, or remove any memory items

Show Settings → Capabilities → Memory section with ‘View and edit your memory’ and ‘Manage edits’ highlighted

Key Takeaways

    • Claude memory is now FREE. No paid plan needed to get started.

    • Use Anthropic’s official prompt

    • Always clean your exported data before importing. Remove outdated or irrelevant content.

    • Memory may take up to 24 hours to fully process after import.
